Our Society is based on the tireless work of former and current village residents. Pamela Keegan, who spent over 15 years researching the history of all things Cropredy, was the driving force. She collected a vast amount of information about current and former families and properties in the village. Much of her spare time was spent visiting record offices, reference libraries, and many other sources to gather information. Pam particularly enjoyed meeting Cropredy people in their own homes – often arriving with a pad of paper and a tape recorder in her hand!
In 1977 Pam founded the Cropredy Historical Society which has continued to flourish and now has about fifty members. Pam’s records were partially scanned to CD and indexed by a small group of volunteers in 2007 – this has resulted in a database of over 25,000 pages which we now refer to as ‘Pamela Keegan Village Archive’. Our members particularly enjoy learning about local and national social history, industrial development, historical events and rural traditions. Suggestions for future topics, speakers and visits in and around north Oxfordshire and adjoining counties are therefore always appreciated. The ‘Pamela Keegan Village Archive’ will remain a valuable source of reference for our members and we hope to continue adding fresh information and photos to our collection.
The Society meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Village Hall in Cropredy, unless otherwise publicised the start time is 7.30pm. There are no meetings in July, August, or December. The majority of meetings involve a visiting speaker and each year we aim to devise a schedule covering a broad range of local and national history topics from medieval to modern times.
Membership costs just £15 a year and gives free access to all indoor meetings. Non-members are very welcome to join us for individual talks at a charge of £5 per indoor meeting.
Cropredy Historical Society is an informal and friendly group and welcomes new members and visitors to our meetings.
Please contact the Secretary, Frances Whitaker at: f.61whitaker@btinternet.com if you would like to join us or have any queries relating to genealogy.
